New hole dug for Basildon's 50 metre pool!

The hole for the first 50 metre swimming pool in Essex has been dug, as the construction of the Basildon Sporting Village steps up a pace.

The pool, that will be 50 by 21 metres and 1.8 metres deep, will have eight lanes and a dividing boom enabling the pool to be split into two community pools. There will also be seating for 400 spectators.

The Sporting Village, opening in April 2011 will provide facilities for a wide range of others sports, including athletics, gymnastics, trampoline, badminton, netball, basketball, and 5 a side football. It will also boast a large sports hall, a regional gymnastics centre, fitness centre, multi purpose studio and climbing wall.

Other facilities include six floodlit five-a-side artificial pitches, meeting and function rooms, a café and car parking.

Cllr Kevin Blake, cabinet member for leisure and the arts, said:
"The progress on site is fantastic to see, with the grandstand terrace in, the building taking shape, and the hole for the first 50 metre pool in Essex being dug. This will be a fantastic facility for the whole community to use and be a part of."

Councillor Stephen Castle, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and the 2012 Games said:  "As construction takes shape it is obvious to see just what a great new facility this will be for the people of the entire county. The range of activities at the Sporting Village will be inspiring, encouraging active lifestyles and a participation in sport. I look forward to its opening in 2011."

Guests from the major funding partner visited the site and inspected the hole for the pool, including the progress of the steelwork, the terrace and grandstand seating.

Once complete over 820 tonnes and 5000 pieces of steelwork will have been erected on site.

Funding partners attending the site were:

Laura Bell from the HCA
Adam Rigarlsford from Sport England
Robin Squire from Veolia ES Cleanaway Pitsea Marshes Trust
Cllr Kevin Blake from Basildon District Council
Eamonn Martin, the 1993 London Marathon winner
