The development of the vitally-needed new Health centre in Wickford moved a step closer, following cabinet's in-principle decision (24th February) to transfer Council land for that purpose.
The PCT are currently reviewing options for the re-provision of the Wickford health centre, but the decision to provide the new facilities is subject to final approval of the project from the PCT and the Strategic Health Authority.
An area of land at Market Road has been identified as a possible site for the modern and much larger facility. Should the PCT decide to go ahead with this, the Council is also seeking to acquire the land and buildings at the existing Wickford Health Centre from the PCT when the new health centre opens. This will help to further promote the regeneration of Wickford.
Development of a new health centre on this site will mean that Wickford Market will be moving, as according to the Wickford master plan. Market traders will be fully consulted on options for relocation.
Cllr Stephen Horgan, deputy leader of the council, says:
"Investment into new health facilities for the residents of Wickford is a major priority for the Council and the PCT. We both think that primary healthcare in Wickford needs improvement.
"The PCT consulted widely with residents throughout December and January, and there is overwhelming support for the new facility to be situated in the town centre close to the existing facility, and as proposed by the Council in the Wickford master plan.
"We hope that this project moves on as quickly as possible and to offer the PCT the fullest support in making it happen."
