It is proposed that £1m of private developer money gained from section 106 (planning contributions) is put into the housing part of the proposed Nevendon Road regeneration scheme.
If approved by cabinet, and subject to the planning process which will include further public consultation, this Council investment will allow the project to go ahead in late 2010.
The project will help improve the lives of Wickford residents, and will see the regeneration of the current shopping parade and the replacement of 26 maisonettes with new housing.
Councillor Phil Turner, cabinet member for resources says: "Due to the economic downturn, further investment is required for the scheme to go ahead. This money from private developers is there to be used for this type of project, and schemes such as this are vital for the future prosperity and regeneration of Wickford."
Councillor Tony Ball, Leader of the Council and a local Wickford councillor says: "The Nevendon Road regeneration scheme is a priority for our residents who have considered its redevelopment to be long overdue."
"I am extremely pleased to be able to support and back our resident's calls for this scheme to go ahead and I am looking forward to seeing the quality of housing and the shopping parade improve which will raise the quality of life and benefit our residents, shoppers, local businesses."
